History of Gazimagusa
( Famagusta )
Magusa is the Turkish name
for Gazimagusa and it has
been used since the Ottoman
conquest of 1571 Gazi mean
war veteran or unconquered,
Gazimagusa is an ancient
site and has the most
impressive array of
historical buildings. The
First Settlement here is
thought to have been circa
275 BC, founded by Ptolemy
Philedelphus of Egypt. Arab
chroniclers wrote with
admiration of the booty
taken from Cyprus and
expecially from Constantia (
Salamis, which was destroyed
in 648 AD by the Emir
Muawiya of Syria. The
surviving inhabitants
settled ni the nearby, small
lagoon town of Arsinoe, the
present day Gazimagusa. The
new immigrants renamed the
town Ammochostos( hidden in
the sand) which was
corrupted to Famagusta.
